Proust reçut l'ouvrage d'histoire naturelle du poète belge en 1907, probablement en remerciement de Sésame et les Lys qu'il lui avait offert en 1906. L’Intelligence des fleurs aidera Proust à montrer l’homosexualité comme naturelle et poétique à la fois, en lui fournissant l’exemple inattendu de la fécondation de l’orchidée par un bourdon, qu'il en viendra à comparer à Charlus abordant Jupien. Peu de temps après cette lecture, Proust pastichera le style hermétique de Maeterlinck ("L'affaire Lemoine par Maeterlinck"), et s'en servira, dans la Recherche, pour moquer l'inculture et le snobisme de l'aristocratie qui ne comprend pas ce style littéraire (par exemple quand les Guermantes jugent inepte la pièce choisie par Rachel, Les Sept Princesses, pour, finalement, la trouver "admirable").
