NOTE
We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for suggesting an attribution to Maria van Oosterwijck on the basis of first-hand inspection. Born near Delft, Maria van Oosterwijck studied under Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1683) in Antwerp around 1649/50. Moving back to Holland, she was active in Delft, Amsterdam and The Hague. In Amsterdam she lived opposite WIllem van Aelst (1627-1683/4), and was influenced by him. Her paintings were much sought after, and Van Oosterwijck received many commissions from the European nobility, such as the German Emperor Leopold I, the King of Poland Jan Sobieski, Louis XIV of France and Stadtholder William III.
This painting can be compared with another signed Swag of Fruit, Berries and Flowers hung in a niche, which was sold, London, Christie's, 8 December 1995, lot 43.
