Charleston Estate Services Auctions & AppraisalsJune 23, 2024Mount Pleasant, SC, US

Item Overview

Description

Montague Dawson (1890-1973), Horn Abeam, Chichester's Yacht Pencil Signed Maritime Lithograph. Professionally framed and matted. In frame 42"x33.5"x1.25. Weight 16 lbs. Horn Abeam is a captivating maritime artwork by the renowned British marine artist Montague Dawson. In this painting, Dawson skillfully captures a pivotal moment during Sir Francis Chichesters solo circumnavigation of the globe aboard the yacht Gypsy Moth IV. As Chichester rounded Cape Horn, he faced treacherous conditions with waves towering up to 50 feet over his boat. The painting vividly portrays the perils and challenges he encountered during this daring voyage, which ultimately brought him back to Plymouth on May 28, 1967, where he received a heros welcome.
