The MC-30 was one of the most significant amps in McIntoshâs history and very likely one of the top 3 amps to ever come out of the golden era of high fidelity. Its design is rooted in its 1953 predecessor, the A-116, which was a hammer-toned 6BG6G tubed amp marketed for professional audio applications. McIntosh noticed the demand for this amp was spreading into the consumer marketplace, which was clamoring for higher quality gear. This convinced McIntosh to dive head first into this newly evolving high-end-audio industry. In 1954 they redesigned A-116 into the A-116B/MC-30, utilizing the premium 1614, 6l6 variant tubes in the output section, and adopting a black enamel and chrome color scheme that brought a whole new level of class to the world of audio
The MC-30 is an undeniable piece of McIntosh history, and set a benchmark of quality and excellence that still defines McIntosh today. 60 years later the MC30 is still widely considered to be amongst the best sounding tube amps ever produced, and the perfect example of what the McIntosh sound is all about. The sound is big, bold and incredibly lucid. It has the sweetness that tube lovers love, yet a level of sonic accuracy and aural refinement that many tube amps miss. Bass is multi-layered, forceful and well-defined. Resolution and detail are extraordinary throughout the entire frequency range. It has that magical midrange sweetness that brings music alive and a tremendous dynamic drive that recreates the impact of a live performance.
Very few amps are highly regarded 60 years after they were produced, the MC30 is one of the few that measures up to its extraordinary reputation!
