More About this Item

Description

This famed and historic engraving is from Hutter's continuation of Matthaeus Merian and Johann Ludwig Gottfried's Historical Chronick, Zweyter u. dritte Theil or Historical Chronicle, Second and Third Part. The work was published in Frankfurt by Hutter in 1745 and 1759. Hutter published these engravings as part of a two volume follow up to Gottfried's chronicle with illustrations from Merian.

The work illustrated various battles, sieges, and events between 1618 and 1750. Included in the chronicle were depictions of the Ottoman war with Venice, the conquest of Crete, Great Turkish War, eruption of Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna, Burning of London, comets of 1652 and 1680, assassination of Wallenstein in 1634, beheading of Charles I of England in 1649, the coronation of Archduke Leopold of Austria as King of Hungary in Bratislava, King Louis XIV in Paris, and many more.

"After 1734 the Meriansche Verlag... The Frankfurt publisher Philipp Heinrich Hutter came into possession of part of the copper plates produced by Merianverlag. With those of the Gottfried World Chronicle and the Theatrum Europaeum, he created a new universal work of history... Hutter clearly described the work as a 'summary' of the theatrum, which is difficult to handle with its 21 folios. By prefixing it with the name of Gottfried, he took away the odium of an anonymous compilation." (Wüthrich)

Mathaus Merian (1593-1650) was part of an exceptional artistic family. He was an artist and engraver himself that was born in Switzerland, and received training in engraving in Zurich, Nancy, Paris, and Strasbourg. He settled in Frankfurt where he worked for Johann Theodor de Bry, another accomplished publisher, and married his daughter, Maria Magdelena de Bry. He was the father of Matthaeus the Younger and the celebrated naturalist and artist, Maria Sibylla Merian. He took over De Bry's published house upon his death in 1623, and became particularly noted for his town views due to their artistry and accuracy.

Johann Ludwig Gottfried (1584-1633) was a German theologian and author. He inherited Theodor De Bry's publishing firm. His Chronicle was his most extensive work that documented world events and human hystory. Gottfried's intention was defined by him as “... in all histories, sacred and secular, the accurate and specific listing of dates and years is very important, without which histories are as if lifeless and become like fables…thus I have sought to do my best in this matter so that readers may know properly in which year each story took place.” (Varwig 2)
