Description: Mexico, ca. 1970 CE. This is a Parachico mask, painted wood in the colonial style with an enormous full-headed fiber wig. The Parachico or Parachicos are dancers from Chiapas who parade from January 15 to 23 each year in honors of local patron saints, cinlduing Saint Anthony Abbott and Saint Sebastian; like many Latin American festivals, it claims to have its roots in a pre-conquest Maya tradition. Parachicos wear masks like this one with European features. Size: 13" W x 11" H (33 cm x 27.9 cm)
