London, Hanover Gallery, Arts Council of Northern Ireland: Michael Fussell, 1962
Like the majority of Michael Fussell's paintings from this period, the present work is an image of the sea. In his distinctive style, highly absorbent tissue paper is steeped in paint and manipulated on the canvas.
The present work was acquired from the artist's only solo exhibition at the Hanover Gallery in 1962. That year the Tate Gallery purchased a work from the same series - Skywards, 1961 - which today forms part of the Tate Modern's collection.
