Description

Monumental Pair of Meissen Potpourri Urns

ca. 1850-1924, German, the neo-rococo vases resting on stands with scrolled feet, decorated with encrusted flowers, the sides with pink- and green-trimmed rocaille molding, the platforms with fleur jette painting, the inverted pear-form vases decorated on the obverse with hand-painted panels of courting couples and their chaperones, dressed in 18th-century costume in landscapes, and on the reverse with flowers, the panels framed with garlands of encrusted fruit, flowers and insects, some nearly life-size, each with a Psyche supporting one end, the sides with delicate flower-molded rocaille handles, the bases made to match, one with a maiden supporting a basket of flowers, the other with a putto supporting a basket of flowers, the domed covers with pierced pink and pale-green scrollwork with scattered flowers, with knops of encrusted flower bouquets and the odd insect, marked with underglaze blue crossed swords with pommel ends.
h. 36", w. 16", d. 11-1/2"
