Nam June Paik (b. 1932)

Paik came to New York in 1964 after studing and working in Japan and Germany. The paintings offered here date from the 1970s while he was artist-in-residence at the Television Laboratory at WNET/Thirteen, New York. The rectangles on each painting may represent TV screens, one of his favorite subjects. In 1982, the Whitney Museum of American Art honored him with a retrospective. Since 1982 he has divided his time between New York, Dusseldorf and Wiesbaden. He represented Germany at the Biennale in Venice in 1993. A retrospective of Paik's sculpture, videotapes and installations, including a seven-story waterfall, was shown at the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 2000. Paik's Transmission, was on view at Rockefeller Center, New York, during the summer of 2002.
