Description: ANTIQUE (3) pieces of Nautical Paper. 1879-80 for Schooner Insurance. 1) Partly printed receipt of payment for cargo insurance for the freight aboard the "Daphne." Receipt dated December 11, 1878 from the Union Insurance Company to Dunn & Elliot, Shipyard.

2) Partly printed Memorandum Receipt from The Boston Marine Insurance Company, which is still a major player in marine insurance today, to Dunn & Elliot Shipyard in Thomaston, Maine. It acknowledges receipt of Dunn & Elliot's premium check for the Schooner "Ida & Annie" & is dated November 29th 1878.

3) Partly printed Memorandum Receipt from The Boston Marine Insurance Company, which is still a major player in marine insurance today, to Dunn & Elliot Shipyard in Thomaston, Maine. It acknowledges receipt of Dunn & Elliot's premium check for an unnamed Schooner, possibly the "Lizzie Heysen"(?) & is dated March 12, 1879.

A fascinating look at the late 19th Century nautical insurance system for the schooners that Dunn & Elliot built & outfitted in the era of the "Tall Ships." Three unusual pieces of 19th century nautical ephemera. All are signed by the Secretary of the named insurance companies.

From 1748-1921 Thomaston, Maine was "the town that went sea." Between those years around 670 vessels were built. Dunn & Elliot was one of the premier "square rigged" vessel builders from 1860 to 1921. They built every part of their ships including the sails, in a "sail loft" taken over by D&E in 1864 and continued until the five-masted schooner "Edna Hoyt" was launched in 1920. The last square-rigged vessel built on the east coast was a barkentine "Reine Marie Stewart" which was built during WWI by Dunn and Elliot.
