The sitter was the son of Jan Hoeufft and his wife Isabella Deutz. In 1699 Joseph married Constantia van Toll. This is one of a group of portraits of the Hoeufft children painted by Maes and listed by Hofstede de Groot. Krempel (see Literature) suggests that this portrait was a pendant to that of Jan's brother Jan Hieronymous Hoeufft, signed and dated 1677 and now in a private collection (op. cit., no. A190, fig. 271). Another portait has been identified as that of his sister Anna Maria (ibid., no. A53) but as this is signed and dated 1662 this seems implausible. Two further and slightly larger-scale portraits said to be of the two brothers, one of which is dated 1679, are also listed by Krempel (ibid., nos. A212 and A212a).
