NORMAN LEWIS (1909 - 1979)
Untitled (Seated Pregnant Woman with Cup).
Lithograph, circa 1938. 400x265 mm; 15 7/8x10 1/2 inches, thread upper margin, otherwise wide margins. Signed "Blackburn" and dated in pencil, lower left. A very good, dark impression of this early, extremely scarce print.
Provenance: private New York collection. This drawing was at one time attributed to Robert Blackburn, and the signature and date were added by an unknown hand.
We have found only one other impression of this print of this lithograph in another private collection.
Norman Lewis made this print though while he was teaching at the North Carolina A. and T. State University and Bennett College in Greensboro. The WPA sent out artists to schools without art teachers, and Lewis had volunteered. He was unable to tolerate the segregation there for long, and soon returned to New York - "It upset me because I''d never been south in such intimate circumstances.
