xii, 9-296 pp. With folding engraved frontispiece map after Nuttall by H. S. Tanner, 5 aquatint plates. 8vo (230 x 135 mm). Untrimmed in original boards. Custom solander box. Occasional light toning, scattered paper flaws, short tear at foot of one leaf, map with splits at fold intersections, rebacked preserving original spine label and recornered.

FIRST EDITION. Nuttall was a British botanist who traveled up the Mississippi with John Bradbury in 1810. Eight years later, he sailed up the Arkansas River to Fort Smith, in the company of Major Bradford, and observed the Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Osage peoples, before returning to New Orleans in 1821.
