The Eritrea Railway Medal was instituted by Emperor Menelik II in 1903 to commemorate the construction of the Djibouti-Addis Ababa railway and reward those involved in its construction. This medal was thereafter conferred as a reward for services towards any construction or industrial project of national benefit.
