PAIRE DE GRANDS MÉDAILLONS REPRÉSENTANT LE ROI LOUIS-PHILIPPE ET LA REINE MARIE-AMÉLIE. MANUFACTURE ROYALE DE SÈVRES, CIRCA 1840-1842.
Miniatures peintes sur porcelaine, de forme ovale, signées Nicolas-Marie Moriot, représentant à gauche Marie-Amélie reine des Français, née princesse de Bourbon-Siciles (1782-1866), et à droite le roi Louis-Philippe (1773-1850), d’après les portraits réalisés par Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Chaque portrait est conservé dans un bel encadrement d’origine en bronze doré, de forme rectangulaire finement ciselée à décor de rameaux feuillagés surmonté d’une couronne royale, avec plaque d’identification en bronze doré au bas de chaque cadre portant l’inscription gravée « Souvenir légué par le roi Louis-Philippe à M. le Duc de Montmorency, 1850 ». Cette paire de cadres est présentée sur un encadrement en bois noirci, de forme rectangulaire réalisé en 1863 par la Maison P. Parra à Paris. Au centre apparaît une plaque en bronze doré portant l’inscription gravée : « Après la mort du duc de Montmorency en août 1862, ces deux portraits ont été remis suivant ses instances à la Reine des Français. Ces deux portraits ont été donnés par la reine Marie-Amélie à Mr le Mis et Mme la Mise de Gontaut en janvier 1863 ». Légères usures du temps, mais très bon état général. Signature du mouleur : Jean-Claude Leguiller, actif de 1810 à 1848.

Historique : les deux œuvres dont s’est inspiré Nicolas-Marie Moriot (1788-1852), pour l’exécution des miniatures que nous présentons, furent réalisées par Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873). Le portrait en pied du roi Louis-Philippe, commandé personnellement par le souverain fut livré en 1839, pour le musée historique de Versailles. Sur ce tableau, le roi apparaît en pied, portant l’uniforme de lieutenant général : courte redingote noire ornée, au col et aux manchettes, d’une double rangée de feuilles de chêne brodées d’or, et de riches épaulettes en fils d’or portant trois étoiles d’argent sur un croissant. Le grand cordon rouge de la Légion d’honneur barre son épaule droite, tandis qu’il arbore la plaque de la Légion d’honneur, l’ordre de Saint-Louis et l’ordre de Léopold Ier de Belgique. Le portrait de la reine Marie-Amélie est également une commande de Louis-Philippe, qu’il passe auprès de l’artiste en 1841. Livré l’année suivante, il présente la souveraine française, déjà âgée, dans une pose très digne. Elle se tient droite, portant une robe de velours gris, garnie de volants de dentelle de Bruxelles blanche, que l’on retrouve sur le fichu et le voile qu’elle porte sur la tête retenue par une couronne de feuilles. À l’inverse du portrait du roi, il n’y a ici aucune évocation de la royauté, mais une impression délibérée de simplicité.
Provenance : cadeau offert par le roi Louis-Philippe en 1850, au 6e duc de Montmorency (1790-1862), puis légué au décès de ce dernier à la reine Marie-Amélie, qui en fit don en 1863 au marquis et à la marquise de Gontaut.

If the new auction price does not reach the former one, the failing purchaser have to pay the difference.
In any case, the purchaser will be liable for any deficiency, any and all costs, handling charges, late charges, expenses, legal fees, expenses and incidental damages.

Coutau-Bégarie Auction House guarantees the authenticity of attribution of property listed in the catalogue which can be modified by saleroom notices or oral indications given at the time of the sale, recorded in the official sale record.
The correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibitions or historical relevance of any property is a statement of opinion only.
Any illustrations in the catalogue are solely for the guidance of prospective buyers and are not to be relied upon in terms of colour or necessarily to reveal imperfections in any lot.
Many lots are of an age or nature which precludes their being in mint condition and some descriptions in the catalogue make reference to damage or restoration. Such information is given for guidance only and the absence of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects not either does any reference to particular defects imply the absence of others.

PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
