Notes

The Battle of Verdun was the longest single battle of World War One, lasting almost the entire year of 1916. The City of Verdun was surrounded by a ring of defensive forts. The fort at Vaux was the second to fall to the Germans, after Fort Douaumont, during the initial French retreat. The village of Vaux was totally destroyed and all of buildings razed so Mansard must have recorded this scene before the retreat.
