Inc. 1834 as an import-export trade business that shipped cotton from the US to England in exchange for tin, iron and copper. As time went on, the company began its own mining operations in the US, especially copper. Later on it also went into the lumber business. Became also active in South America and Africa. Taken over by Freeport-McMoran in 2007 for $25.9 billion who as such became the world's largest publicly-traded copper company.
