Notes

Second state out of four. Besides the c. 14 impressions made of this plate during the artist's life, there is also a posthumous edition of 50 (1920). Just like Degas (see lot no. 56 of this sale), Pissarro is known for his experiments with the etching technique. Starting from the third state, he made radical changes, both in the technique - aquatint - and in the image. According to a photocopied note on the reverse, based on Cailac, this print is a unique proof diplomatic with the first state and executed before the aquatint. The catalogue raisonné, however, states that no copies of the first state were found. The copy offered here is the only known of the second state and therefore the oldest impression known of this etching.
