More About this Item

Description: 1818 33 GIRONDE. BORDEAUX. Actions de F1000. black. No 15. Thin paper with folds and a few tiny edge-splits. Also some faint staining. Large format. This share certificate is most unusual. It is entirely hand-written, and quotes the text of the law by which the loan of 2 million francs by the Bordeaux businessmen and ship-owners is authorised, with the name of the King (Louis XVIII) in block-capitals. The law is then followed by the assurance that the owner is entitled to payment of dividends and capital, signed by the Bordeaux financiers authorised to manage the loan. Then follows the statement that E. Devillas & Cie. is the owner of shares no. 15, 16, 209 and 210. This Compagnie du Pont de Bordeaux was created in 1818 and chaired by Pierre Balguerie-Stuttenberg (an important Bordeaux ship-owner and banker). The company constructed the impressive and still existing "Pont de Pierre", 487 meters long. The bridge links the Bordeaux city center with the quartier de La Bastide, crossing the Garonne River. Its construction costed 6,5 million francs and the company charged a toll on all people and vehicles using the bridge. Taken over by the city of Bordeaux in 1863. The stone bridge is still an important landmark of Bordeaux today and protected as National Monument. Only this one share is known to us and originates from an old collection. Rarity 12.
