PRÉCIEUX RELIQUAIRE CONTENANT
DES SOUVENIRS DU DUC DE BERRY.
En bronze doré et de forme rectangulaire, à décor d’un encadrement ciselé de fleur de lys en relief, vitré sur les quatre faces. L’ensemble est soutenu par quatre sphinx de style égyptien, reposant sur un socle rectangulaire à décor d’une frise finement ciselée de feuilles d’acanthe et portant gravée l’inscription : « Charles-Ferdinand, duc de Berry, né à Versailles le 24 janvier 1778, assassiné à Paris le dimanche 13 février 1820 à 11 h du soir, mort le lendemain 14 à 6 h et demie du matin. ».
La partie supérieure s’ouvre par une charnière et est surmontée de deux branches de laurier enrubanné contenant au centre un médaillon double-face orné des profils du duc et de la duchesse de Berry en bronze mat, entouré de la devise « Rien ne m’est plus – Plus ne m’est rien » et sur la face avant est gravée l’inscription : « Fils de Saint Louis montent au ciel ». L’intérieur contient au centre une petite coupe portant un morceau d’éponge, gravé sur le socle : « Morceau de l’éponge sur lequel le cœur de Mgr le duc de Berry a été déposé le 15 février 1820 », un fragment de tissu en soie de couleur blanche provenant de la robe portée par la duchesse de Berry, le soir ou son époux fut assassiné, comme le précise la plaque portant l’inscription gravée : « Morceau de la robe de Madame la Duchesse de Berry couverte du sang de son malheureux époux », un médaillon rond en or, partiellement émaillé d’un liseré noir et gravé : « Cheveux de Monsieur le duc de Berry, 14 février 1820 », un médaillon rond en or, gravé : « Cheveux de Mme la duchesse de Berry, 14 février 1820 ». Au revers du couvercle est conservée sous verre, dans une frise de fleurs de lys, une lettre autographe signée du comte de Gontaut-Biron et de sa femme, née Adélaïde de Rohan-Chabot, avec deux cachets en cire noire à leurs armes : « 14 février 1820 ! Madame la duchesse de Berry étant à l’Élysée dans l’appartement de Mademoiselle et après se trouvait dans la pièce voisine, la famille éplorée et Mme la Vicomtesse de Gontaut, pour qu’ils se souviennent de moi et de mon pauvre mari ! Ce morceau de la robe de Madame la Duchesse de Berry, ces cheveux du Prince, un morceau d’éponge sur lequel son noble cœur a été déposé, nous ont été donnés par ma tante, la vicomtesse de Gontaut, gouvernante de Mademoiselle, le 20 février 1820. »
Travail français – Époque Restauration, réalisée à la demande du comte et de la comtesse de Gontaut-Biron pour contenir ces précieuses reliques données par leur tante la vicomtesse de Gontaut-Biron, future duchesse de Gontaut, gouvernante du duc de Bordeaux. Légères usures et oxydations du temps.

Historique : Charles Ferdinand, prince de France, duc de Berry, fils du roi Charles X et de la princesse Marie-Thérèse de Savoie, est né à Versailles, le 24 janvier 1778. Il meurt assassiné le 14 février 1820, après avoir été poignardé par Louis-Pierre Louvel à sa sortie de l’opéra, rue de Richelieu à Paris. Ce bâtiment sera détruit quelque temps après par ordre du roi Louis XVIII. À son emplacement situé actuellement square Louvois, mais remplacé de nos jours, un mausolée fut édifié à sa mémoire. Il avait épousé la princesse Marie-Caroline, fille du roi François Ier des Deux-Siciles et de l’archiduchesse Marie-Clémentine d’Autriche. De cette union naîtront deux enfants, la princesse Louise (future duchesse de Parme) et l’enfant du miracle, Henri duc de Bordeaux.
Adélaïde de Rohan-Chabot (1793-1869), épouse le 24 novembre 1812, Aimé-Charles (1776-1840) marquis de Saint-Blancard de Gontaut-Biron, puis comte de Gontaut-Biron. Elle fut dame d’honneur de la duchesse de Berry.
Marie Joséphine de Montaut-Navailles, (1773-1862). Se trouvant en émigration à Londres, elle épouse en 1792 le vicomte Charles-Michel de Gontaut-Biron (1751-1826) fils cadet de la branche Saint-Blancard, avec qui elle aura deux filles : Joséphine, comtesse Fernand de Rohan-Chabot et Charlotte, comtesse de Bourbon-Busset. Elle est nommée Dame d’Honneur de Madame la Duchesse de Berry, puis gouvernante des enfants de France lors de la naissance de la princesse Louise de France, future duchesse de Parme (1819), puis l’année suivante du duc de Bordeaux, futur comte de Chambord. Veuve en 1826 et pour lui témoigner sa fidèle reconnaissance, le roi Charles X lui adresse des lettres patentes l’élevant au rang de duchesse, une juste reconnaissance et un titre familier chez les Gontaut. Elle meurt à Paris le 6 avril 1862 étant toujours restée fidèle aux Bourbons. Elle était la fille du comte de Montaut-Navailles qui avait été le gouverneur de Louis XVI et de ses deux frères Louis XVIII et Charles X.

PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
