CATALOGUE NOTE

Painted circa 1886-1888.

Annie Quinsac writes of this work, "I know this work from the reproduction held in the Castle Sforzesco in Milan which can be found among the photographs left by the art critic Somarè of the Municipal Archives. This work represents a theme and subject which is unusual for the artist, [though] the brush work is the same as in other works such as The Gypsies (see Quinsac, no. 638) and The Shearing (see Quinsac, no. 364)... [With its] dramatic play of light, this unfinished painting can be classified among those works produced during the artist's 'transition years', immediately following his move to Grigioni." (Quinsac, p. 411)
