Item Overview

Description

Item Description
The *Rare* 1930s Jean-Léon Reutter P01 ATMOS Clock is a remarkable piece of horological history that embodies the quest for perpetual motion—a concept that has fascinated scientists for centuries, including luminaries like Leonardo da Vinci. In the 1920s, engineer Jean-Léon Reutter, inspired by the 400-day clock, devised a revolutionary mechanism that required minimal power to operate. This ingenious design harnessed temperature variations to generate energy. Inside the clock's bellows, a sealed capsule containing a mixture of gas and liquid expands and contracts with temperature changes, continuously winding the mainspring. Amazingly, a mere one-degree temperature change can power the clock for two days. This atmospheric energy source led to the name ATMOS.

In 1928, Reutter introduced his first ATMOS clock prototype, which wound itself using changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure. By 1930, the commercial production of the P01 model began. This flagship model not only showcased unparalleled ingenuity but also set a new standard in modern design with its precision-made skeletonized movement encased in a glass dome. The P01 is celebrated as one of the most significant horological achievements of all time.

Production of the Reutter P01 Atmos clock was limited due to its high cost and the precision required in its manufacturing. Few factories were equipped to meet these exacting standards, leading Reutter to collaborate with Swiss watchmaker LeCoultre. LeCoultre produced later Atmos models and eventually acquired Reutter's patents. They have continued to produce various Atmos models to this day.

Despite the many remarkable Atmos clocks produced over the past 94 years, none are as avant-garde as the original P01. Owning one of these rare timepieces is a privilege that few will ever experience.

Condition Report

The clock is not functioning. It has been unused for many decades. When leveled and set, it runs for a few minutes before stopping. Being 90 years old and appearing all original, it requires attention from someone not only familiar with Atmos clocks but also experienced with the unique bellows of the model P01. Cosmetically, the clock is clean, with no corrosion or wear on the original nickel plating. The original black base is cracked, which is a common issue with these models. However, the original glass dome is fully intact with no cracks or damage.

The clock will be professionally packaged, with the glass dome shipped separately in its own custom double box.
