From the castle of Rosendael
Contains the first original edition of Manon Lescaut, which was published by Abbé Prevost in Amsterdam as the seventh volume of his famous novel 'Mémoires et aventures d'un homme de qualité qui s'est retiré du monde'. Manon Lescaut was banned in France due to its controversial nature, and the edition published twenty years later had to be censored by the author. The novel became very popular immediately upon publication, and was many times referred to in the arts - be it the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini or The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
