The hero 'Boby' rides his rocking horse, mobilises his toy soldiers, while his sisters install an infirmary and his mother knits warm sweaters for the brave soldiers. One illustration on the battle of Liège is very remarkable: a pair of giant black Prussian boots dominate the entire landscape but nevertheless attacked by very tiny soldiers of the Belgian army. Extraordinary book, from a perspective unthinkable today. The war is presented as a game, more or less won by a little French boy and his Canadian and Belgian allies. Of course the First World War was a goldmine for caricaturists but generally they worked for a more adult audience. We found a copy of the English edition given to a school boy for his good behaviour in the school year running 1915-1916 ( http://www.wiltshireatwar.org.uk/story/at-war-by-charlotte-schaller-leigh-school-pupil-receives-a-book-for-good-behaviour-1915-1916/ ). Schaller published a second, similar book, as tendentious as the work offered here. Extremely rare.
