Alpine houses with barrels and benches outside with inscription 'R Savery' lower right black chalk, brown, light blue and pale pink wash, top left corner made up 144 x 174 mm. PROVENANCE Anonymous sale; Sotheby Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 9 June 1975, lot 48. Anonymous sale; Christie's, London, 12 December 1978, lot 160 (to Dreesmann). Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. B-63). LITERATURE J.A. Spicer, The Drawings of Roelandt Savery, [unpublished dissertation], Yale, 1979. NOTES In the ten years between 1603-1613, Savery worked at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, and travelled extensively not only in Bohemia, but also in the Tyrol where he made numerous studies of the mountain landscapes and vernacular architecture. The chalets in the present drawing are similar to those found near Salzburg.
