NOTE

Savery's pictures of rocky forest torrents and waterfalls were doubtless based on his travels in the Tyrol and in the mountainous areas of Bohemia. He continued to paint them from as early as 1609 until the late 1620s, and because they vary little in handling and colour, they are not easy to date. The present picture, which has only recently come to light, is broadly comparable with another, depicting Orpheus and the Animals, in Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, which is also on a copper plate of similar size, and dates from circa 1622[1]. By the mid-1620s, Savery used copper supports for his pictures very rarely.
