L'homme blond represents one of de la Fresnaye's rare forays into abstracted portraiture. Painted with extreme delicacy and richness of hue (the modeling of pigments is exceptionally fine), this is also one of the artist's last cubist compositions having been executed only three years prior to the artist's death. The contours of the sitter's face, his curved moustache and the creases of his shirt have been conveyed with vivacity and a sense of fun, suggesting a strong rapport between the artist and his anonymous subject.
