Description

Samuel John Carter (British, (1835 - 1892), "A Little Freehold," large format hand colored engraving on paper, dedicated and titled in the margin lower center and published in London on November 19, 1878 by Louis Brall & Sons, inscribed lower left "Painted by S. J. Carter" and inscribed lower right "Engraved by T. L. Atkinson," label verso with information from "Art Lore," measures 18.50 x 23 inches to the edge of the image, 32.50 x 39 inches framed. CONDITION: Good, some toning to the paper, frame a little loose, otherwise fine. Carter was an English artist and illustrator who was based in London and Swaffham, Norfolk. He was primarily an animal painter, working for the Illustrated London News in that field from 1867 to 1889. Exhibiting at the Royal Academy, he drew positive comment from John Ruskin.
