Description: COLLECTIBLE SIGNATURE On 2 high X 3 1/2 inch wide Card Of Noted American Actor Charlotte Cushman. Approximately 2 inch high by 3 1/2 inch wide card signed by early noted American Actor Charlotte Cushman. Boldly signed in ink: "CHARLOTTE CUSHMAN"
"American actor Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876) is considered to be the first stage star to be born in the United States. In her 17-year career as an actor and, briefly, an opera singer (1835-1852), she became known for her powerful performances in tragedies, as well as performing in men's roles. Her voice was noted for its full contralto register, and she was able to play both male and female parts. She lived intermittently in Rome, in an expatriate colony of prominent artists and sculptors, some of whom became part of her tempestuous private life. She and her sister Susan were famous for their performance of "Romeo and Juliet," with Charlotte as Romeo, and scored triumphs in both the United States and Great Britain. Her most popular role was Meg Merrillies in "Guy Mannering," but she was also known for her performance of Lady Macbeth in "Macbeth," the title role of "Hamlet," Cardinal Wolsey in "Henry VIII," Bianca in "Fazio" and Nancy Sykes in "Oliver Twist." After retiring, she used her fame to promote the careers of other woman artists. A lesbian, Cushman had romantic relationships with several women, but amazingly for that era, these did nothing to damage her career or reputation during her lifetime. In 1849 Cushman took up residence with Matilda Hays in Rome. They began living in an American expatriate community there, made up mostly of the many lesbian artists and sculptors of the time. Cushman used her notoriety to promote the works of African American/Native American sculptor Edmonia Lewis, who became a close friend and whom Cushman greatly admired."
