Notes

Between 1950 and 1962 Carel Willink created a series of eighteen landscapes with exotic animals. The artist believed that depiction of an animal in a landscape gives a new meaning both to the creature and to its surroundings, which results in a feeling of 'vervreemding' (alienation). In this captivating painting Willink places a northern tamandua (left) and a giant anteater (right) in front of a rocky river view. An image of the Smith Red Tower Park (Oregon, USA) from National Geographic served as an example for the mountainous decor of this painting (!) (source: Willink Natuurlijk), but any arbitrariness one might suspect with this approach is completely lost by the touch of the master's hands. In the final version offered here the actors seem to have lost their leading roles, it is the background that gets the stage light. These tropical animals living in rainforests and savannas could never survive in the mountains, and this deliberate contradiction adds to the magical realistic nature of the composition. A masterpiece in its own right. And an artefact only one handshake away from one of the most prominent, most ideosyncratic artists of 20th century Dutch painting. Sylvia Willink presents 13 of these 'animal paintings' on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEhhVXmeBu0 NB A reduced buyer's premium of 10% including tax is applicable to winning bids exceeding € 100,000 (please see terms and conditions).
