Gay Table was painted between 1958 and 1962. The picture includes several favourite objects which appear in other still lifes by Gillies. The ceramic fish and the jug can also be seen in Still Life with Octagonal Table of c.1958 and the triple-spouted vase appears in Shadowed Interior of 1961and Still Life with Solomon's Seal (sold in these rooms, 13 April 2003, lot 91).
