RAPPARD, Anthon van (Dutch 1858 - 1892).

Notes

During his short life Anthon van Rappard was a student of the internationally renowned artist Lourens Alma Tadema. He was close friends with Vincent van Gogh for several years, until it abruptly came to an end. Van Gogh had sent the lithograph of 'De Aardappeleters' (1885) [The Potato Eaters] to Rappard, which Rappard criticised harshly. Van Gogh decisively ended their relationship in a short note: 'Uw schrijven ontving ik zooeven – tot mijn verwondering.– Ge ontvangt het hierbij terug.' [I just received your letter — to my surprise. — You hereby get it back.] (source: vangoghletters.org). This extraordinary work shows us Van Rappard at his peak. His oeuvre is very small, still lifes are seldomly offered and hardly ever of this quality.
