Notes

François-Joseph Kinsoen initially received training at the Academy of Art in Brussels, his birthplace. A classically-educated pupil of Bernard Fricx, and then of J.-B. Suvée upon relocation to Paris, Kinsoen became known for the history paintings in the style of Jacques-Louis David.

He was nominated official portraitist of Jérôme Bonaparte, king of Westphalia, in 1808, and later the Duke of Angoulême and Leopold I, king of Belgium. Kinsoen is best known for the refined elegance and rich detail of his portraits, which would have a powerful influence on works such as the present.
