Description: Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A rare, flattened cylinder-shaped stone seal, made from a creamy, hard white stone, pierced laterally to be worn. Both sides are incised with the form of a griffin (gryphon). The griffin is a beast with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion who was renowned in mythology for guarding gold mines and other treasures. Comes displayed with stamped clay, on a custom stand. Size: 1" W x 0.4" H (2.5 cm x 1 cm); size of stand: 3.1" W x 1.4" H (7.9 cm x 3.6 cm)
