Notes

In 1948 Eugène Brands became a member of the Dutch Experimental Group, which was transformed into the International Cobra Group later the same year. Upon joining the group, the same year this painting was created, the artist published the article ‘To the Point’ in the Reflex journal, where he emphasized the importance of form and colour over representation in art: 'Uit hoofde van onze bezigheid van schilderen werken wij met vorm en kleur en net zo min U een Merel langs de Amstel vraagt naar de titel van zijn lied, kunt U van ons een direct antwoord verwachten op de geijkte vraag 'wat stelt het voor?'
