Description

A female allegorical figure standing in a niche, a globe in her right hand with inscription 'Mache so Benfate' ( verso ) black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown-grey wash, watermark star over M in a shield 279 x 121 mm. LITERATURE J.A. Gere, 'Taddeo Zuccaro: Addenda and Corrigenda', Master Drawings, 1995, XXXIII, no. 82E, fig. 37. NOTES This drawing was probably executed for the same decorative scheme as a sheet for a mural decoration in Paris, private collection, J. Gere, op. cit., no. 209B, fig. 66. The Paris drawing is divided into two parts, with a scene in a cartouche on the right and a standing figure in a niche on the left looking to the left and holding a circular device. The present drawing, with a figure looking to the right, could have been intended to be placed to the right of the central cartouche. The light comes from the left in both drawings. An earlier study for the figure in the present drawing, with numerous variations, was also published by Gere, op. cit., no. 2640, fig. 103. Variants for the scene in a cartouche were in the British Rail Pension Fund sale, Sotheby's New York, 11 January 1990, lot 26-7 (J.A. Gere, op. cit., no. 82C, fig. 35 and no. 147a, fig. 56).
