ALEXANDER THE GREAT CUTTING THE GORDIAN KNOT. Pen and brown ink and point of the brush and red wash, within a drawn oval. 224 by 389 mm. Provenance: I.O. Wessner (L.2562a); sale, Munich, Karl und Faber, 6/7 June 1968, lot 52 (as Perino del Vaga); Herbert List (bears his collector's mark). Exhibited: Munich, Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, etc., Stiftung Ratjen, Italienische Zeichnungen des 16.-18. Jahrhunderts, 1977, cat.34 (as Taddeo Zuccaro). Literature: J.A. Gere, Taddeo Zuccaro, London 1969, p.97, in note 1, p. 176, cat.136, fig.128a. This drawing was first recognised by Philip Pouncey as a finished study for one of the frescoed scenes illustrating the life of Alexander in the Palazzo Caetani, Rome (formerly the Palazzo Mattei). The commission, which is recorded by Vasari, has been dated to circa 1560.
