Some of the outlines indented. 294 by 140mm. Provenance: J. Talman; Sir Thomas Lawrence (L.2445); Samuel Woodburn; Sir Thomas Philipps; T. Fitzroy Fenwick; puchased from him in 1930 by Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach, The Philip H. and A.S.W. Rosenbach Foundation, Philadelphia; British Rail Pension Fund; sale, in these Rooms, 11 January 1990, lot 26 (as Taddeo). Literature: J.A. Gere, 'The Lawrence-Phillips-Rosenbach Zuccaro Album', in Master Drawings, vol. VIII, no.2 (1970), p.133, no.26, pl.16b (as Studio of Zuccaro); J.A. Gere, 'Taddeo Zuccaro: Addenda and Corrigenda', in Master Drawings, vol. XXXIII, no.3 (1995), pp.258-9, no.82-C, fig.35 (as Taddeo Zuccaro). In his 1995 article, Gere revised his opinion of the authorship of this drawing and concluded that the penwork and facial types were Taddeo's own. He also reattributed to Taddeo the related drawing also from the Rosenbach Foundation (see sale, in these Rooms, 27 January 1999, lot 48) and published another one previously unknown (op. cit., 1995, p.279, no.147-A, fig.56 and p.289, no.209B, fig.66). These drawings still cannot be related to a surviving composition.
