Description: CARTOGRAPHY - ORTELIUS, Abraham. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Antwerp, Gielis Coppens van Diest, 1571. Folio. Contemp. full mottled calf (sl. rubbed, spine ends damaged, spine creased, binding shaken, free endpapers gone) with raised bands, gold-tooled compartments and spine title on red lettering piece, all edges marbled. With engraved title and 53 double-page engraved maps mounted on guards. Wormholes through guards, endpapers and spine, text leaves browned, minor imperfections to the maps (small holes/tears along the folds (most closed, several with miniscule repairs in ink)) and occasional light foxing), minor staining to the text pages on the reverse of the maps (mainly in gutters), several small tears and holes to the text leaves and margins of the maps, overall maps in very good condition. Complete. (7), 53, (31) f. Very rare.
Good copy of the second edition of Ortelius' monumental Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, known as the first modern atlas. With the famous Mappa Mundi, engraved by Frans Hogenberg, clean and complete.
