Description

UFFENBACH, Zacharias Conrad von (1683-1734) -- Bibliotheca Uffenbachiana universalis sive catalogus librorum tam typis quam manu exaratorum. Frankfurt: J.B. Andrea and H. Hort, 1729-1731.

4 volumes, 8 o (166 x 101 mm). Titles printed in red and black. Contemporary boards, flat spines gilt-lettered (a little worn). Provenance: George H. Bode (bookplate).

The library of Uffenbach, at one time mayor of Frankfurt, was one of the largest of his time, counting, according to Buzas, 40,000 titles bound in 12,000 volumes, among them 413 incunabula. Towards the end of his life he decided to dispose of it, but frustrated by the unpredictable results of book auctions, decided to take matters into his own hands, himself compiling its catalogue, and affixing to each item the price he wished to obtain for it. The first item in Vol. I is the Gutenberg Bible, priced at 200 Taler; the Eliot Indian Bible (I, p. 14, No. 41) could be had for 6 Taler. The unsold books were auctioned after his death in 1735 by Varrentrap in Frankfurt (see Loh, Sonderband II, p. 32). Uffenbach had published a catalogue of his manuscripts in Halle, 1720. Bogeng; Petzholdt (only 2 parts). (4)
