Item Overview

Description

Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition, during the years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841 1842. In five volumes, and an atlas.
Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1845. 6 volumes, including atlas, imperial 8vo in fours [280 x 180 mm]. Illustrated. Maps.
Publisher’s decoratively blind-stamped light green cloth, text volume boards with gilt-stamped eagle on shield with ship on background.
FIRST TRADE EDITION, limited to 1000 copies. A fine set.

Taurus 6. Spence 1262. Conrad p54. Third issue. During the first official American expedition to attempt a scientific examination of Antarctic waters, one of Wilkes’ ships penetrated far enough to discover the Shackleton Ice Shelf, to survey some 1,600 miles of Antarctic coastline, and to confirm that Antarctica was indeed a continent. Given this auspicious start, it is puzzling that the United States would wait almost 100 years before mounting a second Antarctic exploring expedition.

It is possible to follow and bid at the auction online through Invaluable until the auction ends in the auction room. This means that online bidders can join the auction and bid against live bids in the auction room. It is also possible to register a maximum bid and the Invaluable-system will handle your bids against other bidders up to your limit.

All bids are binding as soon as the system has informed that the reserve price has been met.

For those who cannot attend, we will execute advance bids on catalogued items. If you're new to Sagen & Delås auctions, please contact us in advance of the sale. From presentation date of the catalogue to at latest 1 hour prior to auction start, Sagen & Delås accepts advance bids (commission bids). Advance maximum bids ex. buyer's premium can be submitted to Sagen & Delås by mail or email. On behalf of the client Sagen & Delås will bid to submitted maximum in any competition with other bidders. Your maximum bid is handled professionally and discreetly against other bids. If there were no other bidders on the item, hammer price will be the reserve price.

Potential bidders can register for bids by telephone well in time before the auction and no later than the day before. Sagen & Delås will then make telephone contact with the bidder just before the desired object is announced in the auction room.

Estimates are in Norwegian Kroner. A premium of 25% is added to the hammer price (30% incl. VAT on art, prints and manuscripts, this is reduced to 25% if approved export from Norway. As an optional service SD-Auctions can offer a shipping opportunity through FedEx at fixed rates). Premium of 25% is the same online as in auction room (Invaluable Buyer's Premium Parity).
