Commissioned by the present owner, acquired directly from Gerard van de Groenekan, 1984

Notes

Van de Groenekan (1904 - 1994) assisted Rietveld from 1917 onwards, when he was only 13 years old. In 1924 he started manufacturing the furniture Rietveld designed. In fact most genuine 'Rietveld chairs' were produced by Van de Groenekan. This extraordinary example was manufactured using the same materials, the same dimensions and the original moulds of the first copies Van de Groenekan. Two differences: First Van de Groenekan was 80 years old (!) in 1984 and second, he did not paint the chair red this time nor did he pickle the frame. Instead he covered the whole under an opaque layer of white paint, everything except the ends of the armrests and the frame. These black details make it clear, we are looking at a previously unknown member of the same family, somewhere between the blue-red elders and the 'military' offspring. For his Military series Rietveld experimented with monochrome furniture, mostly adding white, red or black details to the main colour. A red version is in the collection of the Centraal Museum Utrecht and a red/white variant is in the Kröller-Müller Museum. We were not able to trace another black and white copy.
