"Brief descriptions of the more common and useful bird species of Massachusetts, with accounts & illustrations of their food habits. There is also a chapter on the means of attracting and protecting birds, which is an early environmental mention of concern for the natural world."

Profusely Illustrated with photos & drawings. Presentation inscription on 1st blank end paper, o/w internally tight & unmarked. Binding Exterior: handling wear to edges especially at head/foot of spine/some soiling to covers; but all decoration/lettering bright (see scan(s).

SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY BY CHARLES JENNEY ON 1ST END PAPER: "MARK E NOBLE/WITH SINCERE REGARDS OF/CHARLES F. JENNEY/DEC 16, 1907." Jenney was an important figure in the study of birds & is an uncommon autograph.

Charles Francis Jenney (1860–1923) was an American politician from Massachusetts. He served most notably as justice of the Massachusetts state supreme court from 1919 until 1923. In 1886, he was elected to the Massachusetts state house of representatives. In 1907, he joined the Massachusetts state senate. In 1909, he gave up the law after being appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court. In 1919, then Governor Calvin Coolidge appointed Jenney to the Massachusetts state supreme court. He contributed to American ornithology through his observations and communications as a member of the American Ornithologists Union, Nuttal Ornithological Club & Charles Maynard's "bird walks" publication. Maynard's "Naturalist's Guide" was America's first publication on a reliable and detailed method of collecting and preserving zoological specimen.
