More About this Item

Description: 30 November 1756 64 PYRENEES ATL. BAYONNE. Action de 1000 Livres. black. Small format with an unusual note in pencil on the back from Guy Cifré writing he confirms the authenticity of this share. This privateer share, among the earliest we have ever seen, was issued in 1756. At that time, France was heavily involved in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), a war driven by the antagonism between Great Britain and the Bourbons in France and Spain. France wanted to invade Britain and used privateers to launch a real "guerre de course", attempting to hurt British trade. However,it had the opposite effect: their attempts were thwarted by a British naval blockade which impaired the French supply routes to the colonies. This particular ship, was named the "Laymable Dauphin". The captain's name was M. Ogier de Berville, a man of nobility. As a privateer, he sailed between Bayonne, Cadiz, Cayenne and Havana between 1751 and 1764. Only piece known to us, hence rarity 12.
