Notes

Unusually fine copy of the scarce first edition in a sumptuous binding by Hardy-Mennil, from the library of Napoleon's greatest general and marshal, André Masséna. "L'enfant chéri de la Victoire" ("the Dear Child of Victory") received the title of Duc de Rivoli and later of Prince de l'Empire, the Prince d'Esling. Acquired possibly during one of Masséna's Italian campaigns that gave him the reputation of a plunderer. The collection of the Prince was auctioned in Zürich in 1939, but this book was acquired by Benjamin Fillon in 1868 (on Quatorze Juillet) already and presented as a gift to Anatole de Montaiglon in 1879. Entries in pen by Masséna ("A.M.") and Fillon: "Benjamin Fillon/St. Cyr-en-Talmondais/14 juillet 1868" as well as: "Donné à mon ami/Anatole de Montaiglon/St. Cyr, 10 avril 1879" with his signature. The book is considered to be "the most complete and ancient encyclopedia of antique male and female costumes and the practices related to them".A copy in the Metropolitan Museum of Art: "Cesare Vecellio, who joined the workshop of his famous cousin Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) before 1548, was active as a publisher by 1570. This book contains 420 illustrations of costumes - exotic and domestic - by the woodcutter Christoph Krieger and marks the culmination of a trend that began in the mid-sixteenth century with a series of costume engravings by Enea Vico. The first section of his book covers European dress, including Ottoman Turkey, while the short section on Africa and Asia includes the costume of Persians, Moors, and Arabs"Christoph Krieger was a woodcutter from Nuremberg, who died just before the book was published. In some descriptions his authorship is questioned, but Vecellio mentions him two times as the one who cut the engravings. Vecellio was a cousin of Tiziano Vecellio (Titian)
