More About this Item

Description

Mid 19th Century; Original, 24" height, 24" depth, 8" depth, bell 12" height, 10" diameter, important identified bronze bell displayed with cast iron figural dolphin rack. Bell is signed and complete with clapper. HMS Leander was ordered and completed in 1814 and was a spar-deck frigate. It was used in several battles in various wars during its commission. Later it became the flagship of the Commander of the North American Station at Halifax. HMS Leander spent her final years as a receiving ship at Portsmouth and was later broken up there in 1830. This bell was then moved to the HMS Newcastle, another large spar-deck frigate built as the same time as the Leander. This ship was used by the British Navy and then sold in 1850 to John Brown for 2500 pounds. Overall condition is outstanding and original. Please view photos. Provenance: N.C. Trust Collection
