Notes

Walter Joseph Phillips was born in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, England, in 1884. Phillips' father was a Wesleyan Methodist Minister, who urged him to pursue a career in ministry, but Walter Phillips instead studied art at the prestigious Birmingham School of Art and the Great Yarmouth Municipal School of Art and Science. In 1913 Phillips emigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he found work as an educator and a watercolour painter. In 1915 he first studied etching and woodblock printmaking, and his work quickly gained recognition. In 1933 he was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In the 1940s Phillips taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in developing the visuals arts program, and at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, in Calgary, Alberta. Throughout his career, Phillips' focused on watercolours and woodblock prints, often depicting the landscapes of Western Canada and people interacting with the landscape. His works can be found in many important collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, and the Glenbow Museum (Calgary). Walter J. Phillips died in 1961, in Victoria, British Columbia.
