More About this Item

Description: ON VACCINE INOCULATION by Robert Willan London Printed for Richard Phillips, Bridge Street, Blackfriars 1806 108, liv and 2 pages of plates. Measures 22 x 28 cms Rebound in half leather and marbled boards by David Newbold The two colour plates are foxed but otherwise this is a very good clean copy. Willan is well known as the Father of British Dermatology. His work on inoculation and vaccination is not as widely recognized. He was interested in public health and especially in the control of smallpox which had been a major cause of death for many centuries in the UK. This work was very controversial at the time. There was a major public debate about the ethics, worth and risks of vaccination and innoculation. The churches were against this practise as were many politicians ands public figures. This book argues strongly in favour of the case and was influential in getting the medical profession to change attitudes thus saving many lives
