Tying a fly, East Dyn signed and inscribed 'East Dyn/W Millais' (lower right) pencil and watercolour, heightened with white and with scratching out 15 x 231/2 in. (38.2 x 59.7 cm.) NOTES William Henry Millais was the elder brother of Sir John Everett Millias, Bt., founder with Holman Hunt and Rossetti of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and later President of the Royal Academy. The two are known to have collaborated on a few pictures, and W.H. Millais exhibited several of his own works at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society between 1853 and 1892. A painter of landscapes and watercolours, his reputation has perhaps been unfairly overshadowed by that of his brother.
