Craven, Sculpture in America, New York, 1984, revised edition, p. 290 According to the Ross/Rutledge catalogue raisonne, Morning and Evening were conceived prior to 1856 and several examples were cut between then and the sculptor's death in October 1874. His studio inventory listed two pair dated 1874, one of which was purchased by a Thomas Vaughn and the other by an E.C. Edwards. The present pair is assumed to be one of these. Another pair dated 1874 were sold in these Rooms on December 4, 1987, lot 67.
